Results from the 2007 National Health Interview Survey showed that 38.3% of Americans reported using some form of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) that year.  That number was up from 2006, and interest continues to grow.  CAM is a broad term and encompasses many forms of therapies that are considered outside of conventional medicine.  Within CAM you will find acupuncture, massage, meditation, chiropractic and osteopathic manipulations, natural products, naturopathy, tai chi, yoga and others.  Also included are herbs, and it is the herbs that are the focus of this website.  The plants.  We offer herbs, of course (check out the nursery), but also information and discussions on herbal medicine, horticulture, and on the many ways that we can bring herbs into our homes and gardens.

The Blooming Artichoke Herbary offers plants found in the various herbal medicine traditions such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurvedic medicine, and Western herbalism.  The plants you find in our nursery are plants that will thrive in our growing zone (zone 7 or 8, depending on who you ask and what day of the week it is), and in general are friendly, non-fussy occupants for your garden.  We believe that herbal medicine goes beyond just the constituents in the plants themselves, and that plants also offer healing through growing and caring for them.  And before you say that is just a little too airy fairy, this is something that is backed up by hard scientific research.  Seeing gardens, being in gardens, mucking about in a garden…gives something back to us.  So while you are out shoveling compost into your garden beds take a moment to revel in the sights, sounds and peace of your garden.
