Viola odorata

Sweet Violet is a spring and early summer bloomer.  Grows in zones 4-9 to a height of 6-12″.  Produces rose, mauve, to purple blooms on short stems.  Plant in full sun to full shade.

Traditional medicinal uses of violet include as a diaphoretic, emetic, expectorant, and laxative, though primarily it has been used to assist with respiratory ailments.

Viola tricolor

Is anything friendlier than a Johnny Jump Up?  Annual or perennial (that will self seed) growing to 8 inches tall in zones 4-9.  The flowers and leaves are edible and have been used to make tea or as a colorful part of a summer salad.  Medicinally, the plant has been used for skin conditions, an expectorant, vulnerary, diuretic , demulcent and anti-inflammatory.  Rich in vitamin C.
