Allium tuberosum

Garlic chives make a beautiful addition to the garden and the kitchen.  Milder flavored than chives, they grow 2-3′ high in a tight clump and put out long stalks with clusters of white stars in late summer.  Full or partial sun.  Average soil and water.  Deadhead the flowers before they set seed to prevent prolific self-seeding.

Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow is an herbaceous perennial.  Zones 5-8.  Pale pink flowers from mid to late summer.  Sun, partial shade, or shade.  Prefers rich, loamy soil.

Althaea contains a high percentage of mucilage which is soothing to inflamed tissues.  This is one reason the plant has a history of use for sore throats and inflammations.  Traditional uses of marsh mallow also include support for urinary tract infections and topically as an emollient for rashes and burns.

Amsonia illustris

Ozark Bluestar, or Shining Blue Star, is a hardy perennial that grows 2-3′ tall and 1-1.’ wide in sun to partial shade.  Blooming with star cluster flowers in a soft blue in May.  The plant is attractive to butterflies and not so attractive to deer.  Zones 5-9.

Anchusa officinalis

A member of the borage family, Bugloss can be either biennial or perennial in its grow habits.  It like full sun or partial shade and grows to 24 inches high.  From a basal rosette of lease emerge true blue flowers that are stunning in the garden.  Used to make a deep red dye.

Anemone pulsatilla

Pulsatilla or wind flower or pasque flower, will grow in well drained soil in the sun in zones 4-8.  It is an early bloomer, generally around Easter.  It has been used as an alterative, antispasmodic, diuretic, expectorant and nervine.  Plant can be toxic, especially if used fresh, and so it is dried before use.  Not for the inexperienced to use as a medicinal, but a beautiful herald to spring.

Anemone virginiana

Tall thimbleweed is a graceful plant for partial shade.  Grows to 2 feet tall in zones 4-8.  Historically used as an astringent, emetic and expectorant.  It is a member of the Ranunculaceae family.

Anethum graeolens

Dill is a ferny and aromatic plant.  The annual grows to 2.5 feet tall.  Leaves and seeds are edible.  Long history of use as a medicinal herb as a carminative, diuretic, stomachic and stimulant.  Plant in loose soil in full sun.

Angelica archangelica

Angelica is a biennial plant, but preventing seed development can extend the plant life.  It is a stately and aromatic plant that grows from 4-6 feet high and will tolerate full sun, partial shade or shade.  The flowers are typical of the Apiaceae family and form a greenish yellow umbel.

Angelica is traditionally used for digestive complaints as a carminative.  It has also been used to support the lungs.

Antennaria dioica

Cat’s Foot or Pussy Toes.  Can you get a friendlier name?  Low growing plant for full sun in zones 4-8.  Prefers light, sandy soil.  Can tolerate drought when established.  Seldom used in traditional western herbalism, but the plant is rich in mucilage and has some history of use in support of chest ailments.

Anthemis tinctoria

Tall perennial with beautiful golden flowers for a low maintenance garden.  Anthemis tinctoria is commonly known as golden marguerite, or golden chamomile, or dyer’s chamomile.  The plant grows from 1-3′ tall and wide in full sun.  Will not tolerate clay but otherwise is an easygoing plant.  Zones 4-6.  The plant has been used as a medicinal for it’s antispasmodic and diaphoretic properties.  The leaves have been used to rub insect bites to relieve pain and start healing.  The golden yellow flowers produce a yellow dye that is valued by natural dyers.
