Galium odoratum

Sweet woodruff is a dainty little plant that in the right place will form a spring blooming ground cover.  It will grow in full sun to full shade, though my own experience says it is happiest in partial shade.  It does like to be kept moist.  Growing up to 12" high with whorls of bright green leaves and tiny white flowers.  The plant contains coumarins, which provide the "just mowed hay" scent.  It is a traditional ingredient in May wines or tonics in Europe and has also been used in perfumes.  As a medicinal is it primarily used now for the anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, sedative, diaphoretic and diuretic properties.  Care should be taken due to the coumarin content.  Zones 4-8.
