Salvia officinalis

Garden, or common, sage is a beautiful perennial to include in your garden, whether you pluck it for the kitchen or not.  It is an evergreen shrub that grows to approximately 2 feet tall and produces the typical Salvia flowers, if allowed.  It likes well drained soil in full sun in zones 5-9.  The leaves and flowers are edible and used in cooking raw or cooked.  As a medicinal herb it has been used as an antispetic, antispasmodic, tonic, carminative and astringent.

Sanguisorbia minor

Salad burnet is not the showiest plant in the garden, but it is certainly interesting.  The foliage unfurls like a green and leafy steampunk creation telescoping out to it’s full glory.  The young leaves and shoots are edible fresh or cooked.  Can be tossed into a salad.  Sometimes added to beverages.  They have a slight cucumber taste.  Best to collect the leaves before the plant flowers.  Burnet is also used in herbal medicine for its astringent, diaphoretic and styptic properties in supporting wounds and rheumatism.  European and Mediterranean native that grows is zones 4-8 up to 2 feet tall in full sun.  Deer resistant.  Guess they don’t like cucumber.

Saponaria officinalis

One of the flashier of perennial herbs, Bouncing Bet is an old cottage garden favorite.  With reason.  It is lovely as a flower.  The foliage is lush and green.  It is generally unfussy.  And it gives off a delicate sweet fragrance.  The root contains saponins which were used as a soap alternative, especially for very delicate fabrics.  Medicinally, it has a history of use as an expectorant.  Perennial that grows to approximately 3 feet high in zones 4-8.

Scutellaria baicalensis

Skullcap is an herbaceous perennial that grows in zones 4-8 and to a height of 8-24 inches.  It produces blue flowers from mid to late summer.  Grow in full sun or partial shade in well drained, moist soil.

Baikal skullcap is a common Chinese Herbal medicine plant used for “hot and damp” conditions such as dysentery and diarrhoea.  Current research indicates that the root contains flavonoids beneficial to liver function and with anti-inflammatory and antiallergenic properties.

Silphium laciniatrum

The compass plant is easy going in most garden soils.  Prefers moist, moderately fertile soil in the sun or slight shade.  Deep root system.  The leaves tip vertically and align north and south to minimize sun expose and provide the basis of the common name.

Various parts of the plant have been used medicinally as a diuretic, vermifuge, tonic and expectorant.  Tea from the leaves is said to be emetic.

Solidago canadensis

Goldenrod.  Sun loving plant produces masses of yellow flowers in late summer and fall.  32 inches high with an 18 inch spread.  Zones 4-9.

This member of the asteraceae family is most often used traditionally in cases of respiratory catarrah.  Also used as an anti-inflammatory and as a carminative.

Stachys officinalis

Wood betany is a perennial that grows to approximately 2 feet tall, producing lovely spikes of pink to purple flowers.  It is attractive to wildlife and prefers to be in moist soil in fun to partial shade.  The leaves and flowers have been used to make an aromatic tea and medicinally as a nervine, tonic and vulnerary.  Zones 5-10.

Symphytum officinale

Comfrey is a perennial growing to approximately 4 feet tall in zones 3-9.  It prefers moist sun in the sun to partial shade but is remarkably accommodating.  Contains allantoin, a cell proliferant, which explains it’s traditional use for wound healing.  Comfrey is also grown and used as a biomass and to activate compost piles.  Rich in minerals.
