What’s Up with the Artichoke?

Blooming Artichoke Herbary was born because I’m a plant geek. In particular, I’m fascinated by herbs and their many possible roles in our lives. These plants have, and continue to be, important as medicine, past or present, as food and host for pollinators, and in our homes and daily lives. Not to mention the joy they bring growing in our gardens.  Learning about them, growing them, and using them, has been a worthwhile journey; one that I anticipate will continue my whole life.

That obsession with herbs was the start of a small nursery in 2012, growing culinary, medicinal and ornamental perennials and herbs. The nursery continues, always expanding as new plants come to my attention. We also produce teas to enjoy before, after, or during, your time in the garden. The teas are available at farmers markets and other events in our area. Additionally, I create handcrafted applique fiber art depicting all those lovely, lovely plants for your “indoor garden”. Our enjoyment of plants and their beauty should not be limited to the great outdoors. My fiber art is available at the events we attend locally, as well as in my Etsy shop.

Oh, and why the artichoke? Well think about it. The artichoke is a gloriously statuesque plant for the garden. Pollinators love the flowers. It produces scrumptious buds for us to enjoy (with or without the butter). The flowers dry brilliantly for display in our homes. And the plant has been used as a medicinal. I mean, really, what’s not to love about the artichoke?

Please explore our site, and/or come visit at one of the farmers markets we attend for a chat about all things green. If you have any questions or comments you can contact me at colleen@bloomingartichoke.com.
